64 Bit Client Support, Office 2010 and Matter Centre

Following the release of Office 2010 there has been a release for 64 Bit specific support, at this time 3rd Party applications that Matter Centre work with don’t support 64 Bit and therefore we will only support installation of the 32 Bit version of the Office 2010 Client with version 4.6 of Matter Centre. It is important to realise that this version can be installed on 64 Bit windows quite happily and is supported and used by us internally. There is no performance penalty in not using 64 Bit Office client unless you are using Spreadsheets and Access databases that are of a very large size.

The Microsoft office website has the following statement regarding 32 & 64 bit versions of Office.

“The 32-bit version of Office 2010 is the recommended option for most users, because it prevents potential compatibility issues with other 32-bit applications, specifically third-party add-ins that are available only for 32-bit operating systems.”

If you intend to use Sharepoint, the List control is not available to users with office 64bit. There are other reasons such as some of the office communicator features will not work. As there may be other Non-Microsoft Add-Ins that users wish to run for the time being we recommend using 32bit versions of office.

Note: Office 2010 is only supported with Matter Centre Version 4.6 and above.
