Search Lists Cancel a button action

"..I have cloned an existing search list and so have the original buttons along with it e.g. edit. I need to run some checks on the selected item (e.g. is the task a milestone task) and if it is then cancel the action. I have tried setting e.cancel = true on a number of events (CommandButtonClick etc.) and no luck. Any ideas how to cancel these events from firing?.."

"..If a button is wired up to an internal Action (Add, AddFrom, Edit, EditWizard, etc) then that action will run before any script you add runs. You will need to remove the internal action and script the action yourself after performing the check..."
